Innisfail attractions to experience during your northern adventure.
Well known for it’s legendary fishing, the visitors and residents of the Cassowary Coast can fish well for both freshwater and tidal species in most of it’s waterways.
Fish species such as Sooty Grunter, Jungle Perch, Tarpon, Mangrove Jack and Barramundi can be caught throughout most of the freshwater/ brackish areas of it’s river systems and Barramundi, Mangrove Jack, Javelin Fish, Trevally, Bream, Queenfish, and Golden Snapper (called big scale by locals) in the salt water/tidal zones. There are a number of boat ramps in the area, finding a launch site is not a problem.
Offshore reef fishing is very popular and Innisfail is home to large commercial and recreational fishing boat fleets. Some of the best seafood can be caught offshore or purchased from local fish marketers based in the heart of Innisfail.
For those that do not have a boat there are a number of areas that are easily accessible. One of the most popular is the town wharf at the junction of the North and South Johnstone Rivers.
Since 1993 both the North and South Johnstone Rivers have benefited from a Barramundi Stocking Program jointly managed by the Department of Primary Industries and the Johnstone Shire Fish Stocking Society. This program has resulted in more than 300,000 micro-tagged barramundi of various sizes being released into the system. Anglers are now reaping the benefits of this program by catching fish measuring up to one-metre long on a regular basis.
The Fish Stocking Society also stock barramundi into Mourilyan Harbour and Liverpool Creek and fishing for barramundi has also improved catch rates in these popular fishing areas. For more information please contact:
